I am reading Robbie Castleman’s book Story Shaped Worship at the moment (I will review it here once finished) and finding it very helpful and challenging. One quote from G. K. Chesterton’s book Orthodoxy stood out for me.
Discussing the whole issue of whether repetition in worship is inherently ‘boring’ or not, Robbie refers to Chesterton and his observation that young children can very easily call for endless repetition of a particular activity, game or story because they have “abounding vitality.” Chesterton goes on to ask whether our boredom with repetition in worship might not be a sign of losing that vitality and losing the wonder attached to life.
It is possible that God says every morning, “Do it again” to the sun; and every evening “Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be the He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we are.
